Biosketch

Prof Khathutshelo Percy Mashige holds a Bachelor’s degree of Science (BSc) from Wits University (Wits), a Bachelor of Optometry (BOptom) from UDW, a Master’s (MOptom) and Doctorate (PhD) degrees from UKZN. He has more than 20 years of teaching and research experience in the field of Optometry and Public Health. Professor Mashige is the Chief Executive Officer of the African Vision Research Institute (AVRI); an African-based institute that links institutions, organizations, academics and intellectuals in the pursuit of confronting the challenges of Africa’s eye health issues. He is the Chairperson of the Education, Training and Registration Committee of the Professional Board for Optometry and Dispensing Opticians; and Chairperson of the African Eye Institute. He is a founding member of the African Translational Research Group and the Centre for Eye Care and Public Health Intervention Initiative, which are forums of African researchers across the globe to stimulate greater collaboration in Africa in health-related research. He is a National Research Foundation-rated scientist and has supervised many Masters and PhD students. Professor Mashige is an Associate Editor of the UK-based Journal, BMC Ophthalmology and serves on the Editorial Advisory Committee of the South African Health Review Journal. Professor Mashige has received many grants including the Economic and Social Research Council’s Impact Acceleration, the South Africa-Netherlands Partnership on Alternatives in Development, Developing Research Innovation Leadership and Localisation, and the South African Medical Research Council National Health. He is the recipient of the Alliance of South African Independent Practitioners Associations (ASAIPA) Healthcare Leadership Award and the South African Optometric Association for outstanding achievement and service to the profession of optometry. ResearchGate
