Home to Africa’s only WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing and Midwifery and a Joanna Briggs Institute node for Evidence-Based Nursing, the College’s nursing programme, established in 1956 leads continent-wide curriculum development and postgraduate leadership training. As KwaZulu-Natal’s largest health sciences training institution, the College prioritizes education equity, enrolling students from disadvantaged backgrounds and offering experiential learning across rural, urban, and community-based healthcare platforms. All programmes are accredited by HPCSA, SAPC, or SANC, with teaching sites spanning public clinics, hospitals, and private health centres. The College also drives cutting-edge research, hosting initiatives like the KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV (K-RITH), alongside 25 leading research groups.

Applications are processed by the Central Applications Office (CAO) which is a central office that handles applications to all universities and universities of technology in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal.  How does it work?

The application form allows you to apply to more than one institution. The form allows for six course choices. Please pay attention to the order in which you select your choices.

Application procedure

Applicants pay an application fee by:

  • Direct deposit at any branch of First National Bank or via the Internet

OR

  • Cheque or postal order direct to the CAO on submission of a completed application form (the cheque or postal order must be made out to the Central Applications Office and the cheque must be crossed. No cash payments are accepted).

International Applicants: Entrance Requirements

International applicants, like all other applicants, are subject to the Faculty Selection Policy and Procedure. Selection is contingent on the number of spaces available. The qualifications of applicants who wrote non-South African school leaving examinations will be assessed as soon as we receive the applications and copies of certificates.

International applicants may qualify for exemption through AEB or Cambridge examinations if they have two A-levels (‘A’-‘E’) and three O-level passes (‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘C’) or equivalent. Certain subject groupings are required in addition to an O-level pass. The University seeks clarification on foreign qualifications from the Matriculation Board. Applicants are requested to obtain foreign conditional exemption certificates. Please ensure that you have your original documents available on registration and arrange for official translations where applicable.

Audiology

Audiologists are healthcare professionals trained to assess, diagnose, and manage hearing and balance disorders across all age groups. This programme equips graduates to deliver accessible hearing care in both public and private sectors. Career activities include hearing assessments, hearing aid fittings, noise conservation initiatives, and therapeutic support for the hearing impaired.

Dental Therapy
Dental Therapists serve as mid-level oral health practitioners, delivering preventive and restorative care. The programme covers clinical training in areas such as extractions, fillings, dental radiographs, and oral health education. Graduates are qualified to practice in both private and public sectors, supporting dental healthcare at the primary and secondary levels.

Occupational Therapy
This person-centred programme trains students to support individuals affected by physical, mental, or social challenges that limit daily function. Occupational Therapists empower clients to gain or regain independence using therapeutic activities tailored to everyday life. Graduates work in diverse settings including health, education, welfare, and industry locally and internationally.

Optometry

This programme trains students to become skilled optometrists capable of diagnosing and managing vision and eye health issues. Graduates conduct detailed eye exams, prescribe corrective lenses and therapeutic treatments, and provide pre- and post-surgical care. Career paths span private practice, public health, academic teaching, and clinical research.

Pharmacy
The Bachelor of Pharmacy degree prepares professionals to ensure the safe, effective use of medicines. Pharmacists manage medication formulation, distribution, and patient education. They play a vital role in healthcare by advising on drug interactions, monitoring treatment outcomes, and promoting rational medicine use across diverse healthcare settings.

Physiotherapy

This programme prepares students to assess, treat, and rehabilitate patients with physical impairments resulting from injury, illness, or chronic conditions. Physiotherapists help restore mobility, manage pain, and prevent long-term disability through evidence-based exercise and therapy. Clinical exposure and access to cutting-edge research labs ensure graduates are well-equipped for diverse healthcare settings.

Speech-Language Pathology
Focused on diagnosing and managing speech, language, voice, and swallowing disorders, this four-year programme blends theory and hands-on clinical training. Graduates serve children and adults facing communication challenges due to developmental conditions or neurological injuries. Employment opportunities span hospitals, schools, NGOs, and academic institutions, locally and abroad.

Biokinetics, Exercise & Leisure Sciences
This three-year programme explores the science behind human movement, performance, and rehabilitation. Students gain expertise in exercise physiology, wellness coaching, sport training, and recreation management. Career pathways include fitness instruction, sport coaching, health centre management, and roles in rehabilitation and chronic disease prevention. Graduates can progress to Honours in Biokinetics, Exercise Science, or Leisure Studies.

Fees

Fees for Undergraduate Courses vary from degree to degree. For the programme offered in the College of Health Sciences, the cost will be around +/- R30 000 per year.

 Loans and Financial Aid

UKZN offers very limited financial assistance to students whose combined family income is less than R120 000 per annum. It is generally offered in the form of a loan which must be paid back, with interest, after leaving the University. A portion of the loan may be converted to a bursary if the student passes all modules in a degree. After the first-year examinations bursaries may be offered to academically deserving students whose gross family income is more than R100 000 but less than R130 000 per annum.

If you require financial assistance, make sure you indicate this on the CAO Application Form. The University will then send out an application form for Financial Aid to potentially qualifying applicants.

The campus clinics are staffed by part-time medical officers and full-time professional nurses. Students with disabilities are encouraged to contact our Disability Office

There are on-campus and off-campus residences, but accommodation is limited. Admission to residence is based on need, academic potential, ability to pay and distance from home. It is not possible to accept all applicants and you may need to find accommodation off-campus. Residences comprise of self-catering units with communal kitchens.z
