Doctoral and Masters Research Bursaries

University of KwaZulu-Natal College of Health Sciences DOCTORAL and MASTERS RESEARCH BURSARIES for NEW REGISTRATIONS: 2024 CONDITIONS OF AWARD:

1. Doctoral and Masters Research Bursaries are available to encourage research efforts within the College of Health Sciences.

2. The value of the bursary is R120 000 (SA citizens) for Doctoral and R60 000 (SA citizens) for Masters (one year of funding only).

3. The bursaries are for full-time Doctoral (only PhD candidates who have registered in 2024/year 1) will be considered) and Masters (only 2024 registrations will be considered) study.

4. For Doctoral candidates, the tenure of the bursary shall be for one year, renewable for a further two years, subject to good/excellent progress; submitting a progress report, and availability of funds. Automatic renewal is not guaranteed.

5. Only application forms completed in full by all parties will be considered by the College Scholarships Awards Committee. Applications must be lodged using the CHS online application website: https://scholarship.ukzn.ac.za/ by the closing date of 08 March 2024.

6. As a minimum, applicants are at least expected to have their research proposals accepted by the relevant School Higher Degrees committees.

7. Applicants who are about to submit their masters and doctoral theses for examination will not considered for funding.

8. As the number of awards is limited, candidates for the awards are generally those who are ranked highly in the categories of intellectual strength, research aptitude and purposefulness as motivated by evidence and reasoned argument by Heads/Leaders.

9. Evidence of publication(s) in the relevant research area lends strength to applications.

10. The quality of the academic record of candidates is considered, with the greatest weight attached to the most recent record; for Doctoral scholarships particular consideration is given to the time taken to complete the masters qualification, with a minimum pass of .at least 60%

11. T he bursary is for South African citizens only.

12. Those who already have other bursaries/funding do not qualify for this award.

13. UKZN generously offers a fee remission for completion of a full-time Master’s degree in one year and a full-time doctoral degree in 3 years.
Incomplete applications will not be considered and no appeals will be considered.
