The Howard College sports fields buzzed with energy on 16 and 17 August as UKZN’s Discipline of Biokinetics, Exercise and Leisure Sciences (BELS) hosted the much-anticipated School Engagement Project Inter-School Sports Tournament.
The weekend-long event brought together learners from several public schools in the eThekwini region for spirited matches in boys’ and girls’ soccer, as well as netball. Matches began at 09h00 daily, with Saturday’s programme ending at 16h00 and Sunday’s concluding at 15h00 ahead of a festive prize-giving ceremony.
The tournament was organised under the leadership of Mr Jed Davidson, UKZN’s Exercise Science Programme Co-ordinator, with strong support from PhD candidate Mr Lonwabo Njani and part-time practical demonstrator. Their guidance ensured careful planning and seamless execution.
UKZN’s honours and third-year students played a significant role, handling co-ordination, team scheduling, assisting with officiating, and managing logistics. Their behind-the-scenes dedication was praised by Professor Rowena Naidoo, Academic Leader (BELS), who highlighted their contribution as an example of applied learning in action.
Reflecting on the initiative, Davidson noted: “Working with local schools through sport isn’t merely an outreach, it’s an invaluable opportunity to build connections, provide valuable input, and uplift communities through shared activity and purpose.”
Naidoo echoed this sentiment, adding that such initiatives reflect UKZN’s commitment to transformative community engagement: “Witnessing students, staff, and young athletes come together in such uplifting synergy reminds us that the University’s role extends beyond academia, into shaping active, thriving communities.”
The event was more than just competition – it was a celebration of youth, education, and partnership. For the young athletes, it offered a vibrant stage to grow and excel. For UKZN students, it was a valuable opportunity for experiential learning and meaningful community collaboration.
The School Engagement Project Inter-School Sports Tournament stands as a shining example of how universities can use sport as a tool for empowerment, connection, and transformation.
